A New Bedford shipyard worker was found dead in the harbor late last week, prompting an ongoing investigation by state and local authorities.

According to NBC Boston, the victim has been identified as 51-year-old Jason Vasquex of New Bedford. The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said Vaquez worked on a vessel at the New Bedford Shipyard and Shoreline.

Vaquez was reported missing on Friday, Jan. 30, after his employer contacted police when his vehicle was found parked at the shipyard. Authorities said Vaquez had last been seen two days earlier. New Bedford police responded to the missing person report, and the department’s Marine Unit located Vasquez in New Bedford Harbor the following day. He was found a short distance from the vessel he worked on and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the district attorney’s office.

Boston 25 News reported that Vasquez was last seen leaving a local adult establishment on Jan. 28. Officials have not released further details surrounding the circumstances of his death.

The drowning remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police, the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, and New Bedford police. Authorities have not indicated whether foul play is suspected.
