Peter Handy, president and CEO of Maine-based seafood processing company Bristol Seafood, will be joining the National Fisheries Institute’s Board of Directors in 2017, working with the organization to promote the healthy message behind seafood as a protein.

"We are pleased Peter can invest the time in moving the seafood industry forward," Connelly said.

Educating consumers about the nutritional and sustainable benefits associated with seafood are values that drive Handy and Bristol, as well as NFI. Handy is enthused to work with fellow board members to boost seafood’s dinner plate prominence in the new year.

“At Bristol, we come to work every day to help make seafood America’s favorite protein by always telling the truth, producing a quality product, and never forgetting to tell the story behind our seafood,” Handy said. “This is consistent with the goals of the National Fisheries Institute, which is dedicated to education around seafood safety, sustainability and nutrition. I look forward to learning from my fellow board members and working with them to help increase seafood consumption in America."

Bristol was founded in 1992, and operates out of Portland, Maine’s fish pier. The company specializes in the processing, sale and distribution of species including mussels, scallops, cod and haddock. In 2015, Bristol reported record sales and shipped more than 6 million pounds of seafood. It is the only processor of mussels, scallops or fillets in the state of Maine to earn a Safe Quality Food institute certification.

Handy took over as the company’s CEO in early 2016, after serving in the role of vice president for Bristol’s business development since 2014.

"I asked Peter to join the Bristol Seafood family in 2014 because he has the values and drive to lead the company’s next phase of growth,” outgoing CEO Darrell Pardy said following Handy’s promotion in February 2016. “That phase is here now, he is ready to lead, and I am thrilled to pass the torch. Under Peter’s stewardship, the company will continue to deliver on its promise, and I look forward to focusing my efforts on our sales organization.”
