The debate on Iceland’s new aquaculture bill is set to continue long after the bill passes into law, both in Iceland and internationally. The bill has just gone through first reading in the country’s parliament, the Althing and is now being considered in the Industry and Trade Committee before a second reading.

The timing of this vital piece of legislation makes the IceFish Exhibition and Conferences the ideal forum to hear more about the Act’s implementation and to continue the discussions generally around open-net and sea-cage farming, land-based farming, offshore aquaculture and fjord farming.

IceFish will be held in Kópavogur just outside the island’s capital Reykjavík from 22-24 September. This year it will feature a new Aquaculture Hub and Conference. The conference, entitled Aquaculture - Driving Sustainable Growth, will be addressing many of the key issues that the bill itself will cover.

Iceland’s industry and fisheries minister Hanna Katrin Fridriksson says, ““One of the main goals is to ensure more effective management of growth in the sector by strengthening administration and supervision,” She went to point out that developments in the industry have become more complex in recent years. “The purpose of the bill is to strengthen the regulatory framework, reduce negative environmental impacts and establish a more robust foundation for sustainable value creation.”
