Recent turmoil over Florida's gillnet ban likely will reach state fishery managers at a meeting this week in Weston in Broward County.

The agenda of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission doesn't include gillnets, but Bill Kelly, chief executive of the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen's Association, said he plans to seek a meeting with FWC staff.

Florida's ban on large gillnets used to catch mullet and other species was approved by public referendum nearly two decades ago.

Earlier this month, a lawsuit filed by North Florida fishermen caused a Circuit Court judge in Tallahassee to lift rules imposed after the referendum.
