The New England Young Fishermen’s Alliance (NEYFA) is accepting applications for its 2027 Greenhorn Apprenticeship Program, offering aspiring fishermen a combination of classroom training, Coast Guard certifications and hands-on experience aboard working commercial fishing vessels.

The program will take place throughout March 2027 and is aimed at young people and career-minded individuals interested in entering New England’s commercial fishing industry. NEYFA says the apprenticeship comes as the region continues to face a decline in waterfront workers and a growing need to bring a new generation into the industry.

Training combines classroom instruction with safety and survival courses and time on the water alongside experienced fishermen and women. After completing the classroom portion, each apprentice will spend five days at sea with an experienced captain. Applicants who submit their materials before October may also have the opportunity to participate in a preliminary at-sea day, weather permitting, which can count toward completion of the program.

The program includes paid experience aboard local fishing vessels as well as U.S. Coast Guard certification in Safety and Survival/Drill Conductor and Vessel Stability. Classroom instruction covers maritime safety, vessel stability and sustainable fishing practices, while mentorship is intended to help participants move from training into employment.

For some past participants, that transition has already happened.

“I never knew I would actually be able to fish as a career,” said Miranda Bellio, a 2026 apprentice. “During my day job I would dream of being at sea and after the program I am confidently working on a lobster boat!”

Bellio now works aboard a lobster boat in Boston, according to NEYFA.

“This apprenticeship provides hands-on learning, mentorship, and a pathway to a meaningful career on the water,” NEYFA executive director Andrea Tomlinson said. “And, once the apprentice successfully completes the program, we match them with a Captain to start their career.” 

NEYFA is a nonprofit focused on supporting young people entering New England's commercial fishing industry through education, mentorship and advocacy. The organization is also encouraging schools, career centers and veterans organizations to share the apprenticeship with people interested in maritime trades, outdoor work or alternative career paths.
