At 9:00 a.m. on Feb. 15, crews were dispatched to a report of smoke coming from a commercial fishing vessel behind 24 North Front Street in New Bedford.

On arrival, the New Bedford Fire Department reported smoke coming from a docked fishing vessel Kineo. Once onboard, fire department personnel made entry to the engine room and were able to quickly extinguish the fire, limiting damage to the vessel.

During overhaul operations, several damaged lithium-ion batteries were discovered and removed. These batteries were then overpacked and later transported to a safe location as a precaution against the potential of more cells going into thermal runaway.

Crews did an excellent job today battling one of the most challenging types of fires they respond to. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation with the New Bedford Fire Department Investigation Unit.
