DARTMOUTH — UMass Dartmouth professor Pingguo He has been awarded a federal grant to help develop a low-impact trawling technology that will help fishermen target specific fish.

He's proposed technology will help fishermen avoid overfished flounder while trawling on Georges Bank.

The technology, which is used in the North Pacific for Alaskan pollock and in Norway for Atlantic cod, could help fishermen reduce the harvest of low-quota flounder while catching more abundant species like haddock and pollack.
