The tragic loss of three commercial fishermen has given unexpected vitality to a new organization of fishermen’s families.

Before a rogue wave capsized and destroyed the vessel Eagle III in January, Charleston Fishing Families was just a group on Facebook — 10 women brought together by concern for the men they loved. Since then, the group has grown to include dozens of members — and an ambitious fundraising effort for the Eagle III families this weekend.

Jackie Chambers, the group’s organizer, is amazed at the response.

“Oh, man — it blew up quick,” she said. “This has really opened my eyes to how close the fishing community is, up and down the coast.”
