If you've spent the summer fishing you might have missed the boat on this trophy scientific news story:
Fish are evolving to become more difficult to catch.
Scientists at University of Connecticut have shown that recreational fishing, even catch-and- release, can change the nature of fish in a lake to make them less catchable.
The fish population overall responds to the human element by becoming less active and aggressive, therefore less likely to play a part in the angler-fish duet.
Fishers of my acquaintance sometimes talk about a once-glorious, can't-miss lake being "fished out," as if its discovery by hordes of people has significantly reduced the actual number of fish it contains.
But as a fish-finder usually demonstrates, the fish are still there in great numbers. They just aren't interested in biting. They've dropped out of the game.
