Texas Gulf Trawling LLC, which operates a fleet of 15 shrimp boats out of the Port of Brownsville shrimp basin, has discovered a new catch: Winter Texans.

Last year, the company started offering comprehensive presentations on the Gulf shrimping industry and tours of an actual shrimp trawler, followed by a shrimp cleaning demonstration, peeling contest and shrimp boil.

The tour was designed specifically with Winter Texans in mind, though it’s open to everybody. At any rate, it’s proving to be a big hit.

On a recent sunny, breezy Wednesday, 40 or so part-time residents of Country Sunshine RV Resort in Weslaco sat in folding chairs inside a metal shed, listening intently as TGT Vice President Greg Londrie held forth on all things shrimp-related — with a strong emphasis on the superiority of wild-caught Gulf shrimp over the imported, farm-raised variety.
