HARBOR BEACH — An experimental commercial fishing operation has made its way to local waters for the first time in more than 30 years.

The DNR says the trial has been strategically planned to limit conflict with recreational anglers, putting it in a lighter-fished portion of Lake Huron, south of Harbor Beach and north of Port Sanilac.

“We believe that there is a substantial and exploitable population of lake whitefish out there,” said DNR fisheries biologist Jim Baker.
