Two mariners were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard Monday evening after a 43-foot commercial fishing vessel ran aground near Metinic Green Island off the coast of Maine.
The Coast Guard received a mayday call from the lobstering vessel Gulf Traveler, reporting that the fishing vessel had grounded along the southern edge of Metinic Green Island while returning to shore.
A Coast Guard station boat crew initially responded but was unable to reach the island to rescue the two mariners. A Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod was then dispatched to the scene.
The helicopter crew successfully hoisted both mariners from the island and transported them to Knox County Regional Airport in Owls Head, where emergency medical services personnel were waiting to evaluate them.
No injuries were reported following the evaluation.
The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the grounding.
