The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) will prohibit commercial salmon fishing in the Cook Inlet Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) beginning at 7 a.m. Alaska time on Aug. 5, according to an Alaska Region information bulletin.

The closure is intended to prevent the aggregate coho salmon stock complex from exceeding its total allowable catch, NOAA Fisheries said. The action is authorized under federal regulations.

The federal closure applies only to the Cook Inlet EEZ. Fishermen should consult the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for fishing periods and regulations that remain in effect within state waters.

NOAA noted that the bulletin serves as notice of the management action, with the official regulatory language published in the Federal Register.
