An active rescue is underway for the fishing vessel Lily Jean, a groundfish trawler out of Gloucester, Mass. It was reported to be sinking this morning at around 6 a.m.
The mayor’s office told Boston 25 News that officials are “deeply concerned,” but no further information has been released. The Gloucester Times reported that the boat had sunk off the coast of Gloucester, and one crewman was reported dead, while the others were still missing.
Boston Wicked North Shore Facebook page reported the vessel missing and presumed it to have sunk. The 80-foot vessel owned by Gus Sanfilippos had reported they were sinking. The Coast Guard has located an empty life raft. In addition to Gus, they reported that the vessel had a father-son deckhand team, a younger crew member, and a federal observer when it sank.
The Lily Jean was featured on the reality TV show Nor’Easter Men, which aired on the History Channel. The vessel, along with another vessel named the Harmony, was filmed taking on the Atlantic's rough seas. It appears the show aired for one season.
