National Fisherman's 2007 Highliners

If highline boats sit a little lower in the water when they return from a trip, it's possible highline skippers stand a little taller on the wharf.

This stance, however, will not reflect conceit or hubris, but simple accomplishment and readiness to embrace the next challenge.

Having fish to catch is one thing. Some fishermen can't take it for granted the fish will have water to swim in. Enter salmon fisherman Dave Bitts of McKinleyville, Calif.

Eric Jordan, of Sitka, Alaska, is following in the footsteps of his mother and father as an advocate for fishermen and the resource.

Norwegian-born Kaare Ness of Shoreline, Wash., emigrated from one world and has helped to shape another in the North Pacific.
