Better fishing conditions for Pacific cod this year are increasing supply and appear to having a stabilizing effect on prices.
“At this point in the season, the supply is better than it was last year and for the last several years because the fishing is better than it has been,” one cod industry observer told Undercurrent News. “The shortages that were more apparent in previous seasons at this time aren’t apparent because the fishing is better.”
According to statistics from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the total allowable catches for cod this year from Alaska fisheries is nearly 250,000 metric tons — 240,000t for the Bering Sea and 9,422t for the Aleutian Islands. That compares to the TAC of just over 253,000t for 2014.
