Applications are now open for the Gulf Commercial Fisherman Program (GCFP), a hands-on training opportunity for the next generation of commercial fishermen in the Gulf of America. The 2026 session will take place May 3-9, 2026 in Madeira Beach, Florida.
The application deadline is March 20.
The GCFP is a week-long training designed for entry-level commercial fishermen and those interested in pursuing a career on the water. Participants gain practical skills and industry connections through a mix of classroom instruction, dockside demonstrations, networking with experienced commercial fishermen, and time aboard working fishing vessels.
During the program, participants learn directly from experienced fishermen, industry experts, and resource managers about topics such as:
- Fishing gear and techniques
- Vessel and dockside safety
- Fisheries regulations and management
- Seafood handling and quality
- The economics of commercial fishing
This industry-led program is made possible through partnerships between the Gulf of America Reef Fish Shareholders' Alliance, Texas Sea Grant, Florida Sea Grant, Wild Seafood Co., and John's Pass Fisherman's Cove and Cottages.
If you or someone you know is interested in building a career in commercial fishing, we encourage you to apply.
