CORPUS CHRISTI (AP) -- Four people have been rescued from a sinking boat near South Padre Island shortly after it was spotted fishing illegally in U.S. waters.

The U.S. Coast Guard tells the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that the Mexican vessel was spotted Saturday night about 30 miles off South Padre Island. Authorities say the area is north of the Mexican maritime border.

A Coast Guard crew intercepted the craft and discovered it was sinking. Three men and a minor were taken to the Coast Guard station on South Padre Island and then transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
