Shrimpers lowered their nets as the fall shrimp season opened over the Barataria-Terrebonne marshes Monday afternoon.

 

The inshore white shrimp season opened at 6 p.m. in waters east of the Atchafalaya on what local fish processors call their “money crop.”

 

“Some say they got a lot out there. Some say there are not any out there. I don’t listen to any of that. They only way to know is to get out there. It’s a gamble,” said longtime shrimper Troy Defelice of Houma, wielding a pocket-knife to prepare the riggings on his skimmer Ms. Cindy.
