As development at Community Maritime Park has made frequent headlines in the past year, plans to construct an $18 million fish hatchery next door have quietly moved ahead.
The last public stir about the Gulf Coast Marine Fisheries Hatchery and Enhancement Center was in May of 2014 when the Pensacola City Council voted 5-3 to lease the 10 acres of prime waterfront property known as Bruce Beach to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission for 30 years.
Mayor Ashton Hayward has billed the fishery as an economic win for the city, and has pointed out that if it hadn't come to Pensacola the 15 or so permanent jobs and money that come with it could just as easily have gone elsewhere.
