A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Savannah rescued five people and a dog from a commercial shrimping vessel taking on water near the Winyah Bay jetties in South Carolina Oct. 28.

The rescued were taken to a local airport where they were evaluated by emergency medical services. No injuries were reported.

The Shayna Michele crew hailed watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders on VHF-FM channel 16 around 12:50 p.m., reporting their vessel was taking on water and grounded on a jetty. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Georgetown, S.C., headed to the scene to assist, as watchstanders coordinated with Georgetown County dispatch to request assistance from available marine assets.

“We train to a standard and our crew worked incredibly well together on this challenging rescue,” said Lt. Hunter Shortly, the aircraft commander from Air Station Savannah. “It was difficult to access the shrimping vessel with its many wires and cables, but our rescue swimmer did a phenomenal job of getting all aboard to safety.”

The cause of the incident is under investigation, and the owner is working with the Coast Guard to arrange for salvage of the vessel.
