The New England Young Fishermen’s Alliance (NEYFA) has announced the launch of its inaugural 2026 Commercial Fishing Greenhorn Apprenticeship Training, a new program aimed at providing hands-on experience and professional training for aspiring small-boat commercial fishermen in New England.
Based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the program is designed to support young people entering New England’s commercial fishing industry at a time when the region has seen a rapid decline in waterfront workers. The apprenticeship combines classroom instruction, safety and survival training, and on-the-water learning, allowing participants to gain practical experience directly from experienced fishermen and women.
Apprentices will complete the comprehensive training program through March 2026, with Safety & Survival Training scheduled for April 2-3.
Our goal is to ensure the next generation of fishermen are skilled, knowledgeable, and ready to carry on this New England industry,” said Andrea Tomlinson, executive director of NEYFA. “This apprenticeship provides hands-on learning, mentorship, and a pathway to meaningful careers on the water.”
Program highlights include:
- Paid, hands-on experience aboard local fishing vessels
- Classroom instruction on maritime safety, vessel stability, and sustainable fishing practices
- Mentorship from experienced fishermen and women
- Direct pathway to long-term employment in New England’s commercial fishing industry
Students, young adults, and career-minded individuals interested in participating can apply through the NEYFA website. The organization is also encouraging schools, career centers, and veteran organizations to share the opportunity with individuals interested in maritime trades, environmental work, or alternative career paths.
NEYFA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting young people entering the commercial fishing industry in New England through education, mentorship, and advocacy, with the goal of building the next generation of skilled and sustainable fishermen.
