A $55,000 contribution from Silver Bay Seafoods to the Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association’s (APICDA) School Grant Program is adding support to participating schools for the 2026/2027 school year.
The grant is aimed at “expanding students’ knowledge of marine ecosystems and fisheries science, strengthen their understanding of environmental stewardship, and provide opportunities to explore careers in the fishing industry,” the association said Sept. 3 in announcing the grant.
The APICDA is a non-profit Community Development Quota (CDQ) organization, counting six member communities in the Aleutian-Pribilof region of Alaska including Akutan, Atka, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, and St. George. Silver Bay Seafoods is a fishermen-owned company with processing facilities in False Pass and fleet support operations in Port Moller and King Cove.
“APICDA’s long-standing School Grant Program complements its wide array of programs to advance economic and workforce development efforts in the Aleutian Pribilof region," according to the association.
"Recent projects supported by the school grant funding have included underwater ROV (remotely operated vehicle) exploration, water sampling and plankton monitoring, in-school programs led by visiting scientists and fisheries educators, and educational trips throughout Alaska.”
The contribution will help APICDA to increase its school grant awards to $16,000for programs in Akutan, Atka, False Pass, Nikolski, St. George and Unalaska. The additional funding will also allow the program to expand to King Cove and Sand Point.
“Silver Bay Seafoods’ contribution reflects the company’s commitment to supporting education and investing in the communities where its fishermen, employees and partners live and work,” the association says. The partnership “is helping provide more students across the Aleutian Pribilof region with hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to better understand the fisheries and marine resources that shape their communities.”
