Like swells on the ocean, rising and falling at the influence of conditions not immediately identifiable, salmon fishing has seen its ups and downs this July. It has sometimes left empty-handed anglers at the dock shaking their heads after another lousy trip, and other times thrilling them with limits all around of big, gleaming fish.

Starting Sunday, fishing broke wide open again after a dreary lull, and boats trolling bait near the buoys several miles outside the Golden Gate have been catching limits all week.

“Fishing is incredible,” said Sean Hodges, skipper of the Hog Heaven party boat in Sausalito. “There are lots of fish and they’re close to home.”
