There’s another piece to the story of the Western Flyer restoration — several pieces as a matter of fact.

The fishing boat made famous by John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts through their 1940 marine biological collecting trip to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, now has a new life as a floating ocean studies classroom on Monterey Bay.

But some original parts from the purse seiner remain in private hands, and the family that owns them are in a difficult situation and need to liquidate them, if not by sale then by auction.
