MARSHFIELD – Peter Mason figures he pulled up 500 pounds of lobster while fishing off the coast of Marshfield on Monday. But there was one trap that really stood out.

“You could see it coming up from the water; it was almost glowing,” Mason said. “Just a deep, deep blue.”

Among the seven lobsters in that trap was an extremely rare blue one.

Blue lobsters are the result of a genetic variation that occurs in one of every 5 million lobsters, according to one estimate from the New England Aquarium.
