A devastating loss has rippled through the Pacific Northwest fishing communities after the 68-foot F/V Captain Raleigh sank Friday morning near the entrance to Grays Harbor, Washington, leaving longtime Newport captain Jon Stevenson missing.

According to a May 11 report by the Lincoln Chronicle, the Coast Guard has suspended its search for Stevenson, 44, who was piloting the Warrenton-based crab and shrimp vessel when it began taking on water. The boat’s pumps couldn’t keep up, Stevenson reported in a distress call, at around 8:15 a.m. A nearby vessel attempted to assist by providing a pump, but within minutes, the Captain Raleigh sank.

A rescue crew from the Coast Guard Grays Harbor station arrived at the scene around 8:30 a.m. and rescued three crew members who had jumped into the water wearing life jackets. However, Stevenson remained aboard as the vessel went down near the Grays Harbor bar entrance, the Coast Guard told the Chronicle.

Stevenson was a veteran skipper based out of Newport, and his wife, Jennifer, is a past president of the Newport Fishermen’s Wives and previously shared her fishing family story with National Fisherman.

Support for the Stevenson family has already begun to pour in. The Fishermen’s wives held a vigil for the family Saturday evening in Newport and have started a GoFundMe campaign for the family.

The search effort involved multiple agencies, and the Coast Guard deployed two additional boat crews from Grays Harbor and a helicopter from Astoria. A U.S. Navy helicopter from Whidbey Island transported a dive team to the area, and a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredge helped locate the wreck, pinpointing its position by 11:45 a.m.

“This is a tragedy for our fishing communities,” said Capt. Justin Noggle, commander of Coast Guard Sector Columbia River, in a statement. “I’m thankful our Coast Guard crews were able to save the three crew members quickly, and our hearts are with the family and friends of everyone impacted by this tremendous loss.”
