It’s the cold season for fishing. Crew are meeting waves and wind-blown spray coming across deck, hammering ice off the rails, and trying to stay warm. These are the fishermen Grundéns talks to and more importantly, listens to. According to Colin Sarfeh, senior marketing manager at Grundéns, the company is introducing several items in 2025 all aimed at keeping crew comfortable on deck, including tough new bibs for lobstering.
“The Sternman Armored Bibs are reinforced in high-wear areas specific to pulling pots & traps,” says Sarfeh. “We designed them for lobstermen, but they can be used in a wide range of on-deck fishing environments.” Under the bibs, Sarfeh suggests that fishermen hauling gear offshore in cold weather can wear a pair of Grundéns Kryall pants. The company designed the Kryall pants for comfort and mobility under the bibs or as standalone weather-resistant pants for when you just need to step out on deck for a moment. “They’re designed with abrasion-resistant stretch woven fleece, plus water and stain-repelling treatments,” says Sarfeh.
For cold days on deck in variable weather, Grundéns offers the new Turbulence Hybrid Hoodie. With a shell made of recycled polyester with a specialized coating to protect it from the elements, turbulence excels in terms of wind, water, and tear resistance. The quick dry double weave cuffs are designed to reduce water absorption and abrasion in the forearms, again with commercial fishermen in mind.
Since the demise of the Red Ledge jacket favored by many Alaskan fishermen, other companies have tried to fill the void. Grundéns offers fishermen the Dreadnought Jacket. “It’s built as a tool to combat the extreme elements of the marine environment,” says Sarfeh. The Dreadnought is constructed of an ultra-durable nylon ripstop fabric with a water-repelling Teflon shield to give it impressive breathability and waterproofing performance. Heavy-duty lower sleeve reinforcements offer the abrasion resistance needed when working the deck and pulling pots, while integrated neoprene cuffs provide a seamless union with gloves to prevent water from entering the sleeves. The Dreadnought also features an adjustable hood, interior rain gutter, integrated body ventilation zippers, plus saltwater-safe, corrosion-resistant zippers & hardware.
While Grundéns has put a lot of thought and energy into keeping fishermen comfortable in cold rough weather, the company has not forgotten those who work under the sun. It has added the Sun Tough Masked Hoodie to its line. Backed with a lifetime warranty, the fabric of this hoodie provides UPF 50+ sun protection. The hood includes a face mask with laser-perforated breathing holes.
“We’ve been providing gear to this great industry for nearly 100-years,” says Sarfeh. “We work to provide fishermen with the layers of protection they need in any environment.”
