A commercial fishing vessel captain was shot by a police officer in Sand Point, Alaska, after allegedly attempting to flee aboard his boat while it was under police custody for a drug investigation.
Sand Point Police officers were standing watch over the docked and unoccupied vessel, which had been seized as part of a State Trooper-led investigation into drug trafficking, according to a police dispatch.
At around 1:50 p.m. on Sept. 1, the boat's captain boarded and attempted to get underway. Officials said officers followed him aboard and entered the bridge, where the captain reportedly produced a hatchet. One officer fired his weapon, striking the man.
The captain was given immediate medical attention and later medevaced for treatment. No officers or bystanders were injured.
Investigators with the Alaska State Troopers later searched the vessel and seized approximately 600 grams of methamphetamine and 35 grams of heroin. The estimated street value of the drugs is $970,000.
The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is now handling the case at the request of the Sand Point Police Department. Once the investigation is complete, it will undergo independent review by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.
