Coast Guard crews came to the aid of three mariners aboard a disabled fishing vessel some 95 miles west of Newport, Ore., Aug. 3 and towed the vessel safely into port on Aug. 6.

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Tahnee Zaccano said the coordinated effort of multiple commands to help mariners in need "is a testament to the teamwork, skill and dedication of the Coast Guard."

No injuries to the crew of the fishing vessel Defiant were reported. No information was immediately available about what fish the vessel was targeting, nor about the owner of or homeport of the vessel.

Crew from the Coast Guard Cutter Alder, a 225-foot seagoing buoy tender, along with an Air Station Sacramento C-27 Spartan aircrew, an Air Station North Bend MH-65 Dolphin aircrew and a station Yaquina Bay 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew all responded to the disabled vessel.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River and Coast Guard Northwest District coordinated the Coast Guard Pacific Area to launch the air crews. The Coast Guard delivered fresh drinking water, a radio and a dewatering pump to the vessel within 12 hours of the initial call for help.t

The Alder established a tow with the Defiant Tuesday, bringing the vessel 80 miles closer to the coast, then transferring the tow to the Yaquina Bay lifeboat crew to bring the Defiant into port.
