A commercial fishing crew member died Thursday afternoon after falling overboard from a fishing vessel near Vinalhaven, according to reports from News Center Maine and WABI-TV citing the Maine Department of Marine Resources and Maine Marine Patrol.
Marine Patrol officers received a distress call over VHF radio at approximately 4:45 p.m. on June 18 reporting that a crew member had fallen overboard from the fishing vessel Long Faces in Hurricane Sound, near Vinalhaven.
According to the reports, Maine Marine Patrol officers and members of U.S. Coast Guard Station Rockland responded to the scene. Before first responders arrived, a resident of Hurricane Island recovered the man from the water and began CPR while transporting him to shore. Vinalhaven emergency medical responders pronounced him dead after arriving at Dyer Island.
The deceased was identified as Marshal Ames, 57, of North Haven. His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, according to WABI-TV.
The investigation later led to charges against two North Haven men. WABI-TV reported that Geoffrey Barrett, 39, captain of the vessel Ames had been working aboard, was charged with assault, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and felony boating under the influence. Theodore Lane, 27, was charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
According to Maine Marine Patrol, the charges stemmed from an altercation with officers at the dock while investigators were conducting their inquiry into the incident. Both men were transported to the Knox County Jail.
The investigation into Ames' death remains ongoing.
