A 37-foot commercial fishing vessel ran aground early Friday morning in the surf south of Humboldt Bay, prompting a rescue operation by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The grounding was reported at 12:02 a.m. when a crew member aboard the Miss Jessie contacted Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay via VHF-FM channel 16, stating that the vessel had become disabled and was stuck in the surf near Eureka, Calif.
In response, Coast Guard officials issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched rescue teams, including an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Humboldt Bay and a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Station Humboldt Bay.
The helicopter arrived on scene at 1:27 a.m. and hoisted all five people from the grounded vessel. They were transported safely to Samoa Field Airport in two trips. No injuries were reported.
The vessel reportedly had about 800 gallons of diesel on board at the time of the incident. No pollution has been observed or reported.
An investigation into the cause of the grounding is ongoing.
