The Commercial Fishermen' — From Teenagers to Captains: Bristol Bay Memoir Tells the Real Story

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Commercial Fisherman and Film Industry Veteran Marc Vance Releases Raw New Memoir on 43 Years in Alaska’s Bristol Bay Fishery

The Commercial Fishermen delivers an unfiltered look at risk, brotherhood, survival, and the last great wild fishery in America.

Launch Date June 23, 2026

After more than four decades chasing salmon through the dangerous waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska, commercial fisherman, assistant director, entrepreneur, and former professional skier Marc Vance is releasing his long-awaited memoir, The Commercial Fishermen a gritty, deeply human account of life inside one of the toughest fisheries in the world.

Part adventure story, part American labor memoir, and part meditation on risk, the book follows identical twin brothers Marc and Malcolm Vance from wide-eyed teenagers shipped north to Alaska in 1980 to seasoned captains navigating storms, collapsing markets, brutal weather, mechanical breakdowns, and the relentless gamble of commercial fishing.

Set against the backdrop of Bristol Bay’s legendary salmon runs, The Commercial Fishermen captures a disappearing world where fortunes can change in a single tide, and every opener feels like placing a bet against the ocean itself.

“This isn’t a romanticized version of fishing,” said Vance. “It’s long nights, diesel, exhaustion, fear, pressure, dark humor, and the kind of friendships forged through surviving hard things together. Bristol Bay has a way of testing who you are.”

The memoir explores the evolution of the Alaska fishing industry across four decades from cannery bunkhouses and hand-stacked fish to modern refrigeration systems, permit economics, regulation battles, and volatile global seafood markets. Along the way, Vance introduces readers to the unforgettable characters who populate dock life: deckhands, old-timers, tender crews, cannery workers, gamblers, mechanics, and captains chasing one more season.

Written in a voice that blends hard-earned grit with sharp observation and humor, the book has drawn comparisons to the work of Sebastian Junger, Mark Kurlansky, and John Steinbeck.

The release also includes a foreword connection to fellow Tahoe local and commercial fisherman Keith Colburn, further grounding the memoir in the real-world culture of working fishermen.

He currently resides in Utah.
