Salmon have begun their spawning season in Northern California, but a man-made levee in Chico is jeopardizing the process for one small population of salmon.

A group of salmon attempting to swim up Butte Creek to spawn have gotten stuck in a diversion channel but the California Department of Fish and Wildlife says it's all part of the river ecosystem.

Alfonso Garcia takes his morning walk everyday along the Butte Creek diversion channel off of the Skyway. Monday morning he says he made a startling discovery in the creek.

Garcia says, "I heard some splashing. My dog took off to the creek and I came and checked it out. Right there. I don't have to say much, right there you can see it."
