After laws aimed at maintaining a sustainable crabbing fishery in California went into effect last year, local fishermen remain mixed on how they’ll be impacted with the start of this year’s sport season last Saturday and commercial crabbers gearing up to begin Nov. 15.

 

Timing can be everything for a fisherman — whether it’s the weather or when a season begins. The district covering the Bay Area is the first along the entire West Coast to kick off commercial crab season, which concerns some local fishermen as some flood in from as far as Alaska.

 

Select charter boat fishermen are also frustrated with a new law that prevents those who carry both a sport and commercial permit from beginning any crabbing activity until the commercial season begins two weeks later. While select charter boat fishermen are concerned their start date has been moved back, others remain frustrated as the Bay Area commercial season is the first to kick off across the entire West Coast.
