NEWPORT – Driven by a high-quality product, the opening price for Oregon commercial fishermen will hit a record $3.10 per pound when the Dungeness crab season opens as scheduled on Dec. 1.

Price negotiations between fishermen, processors and the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission began and ended Monday after fishery managers decided last Saturday to open the season at 9 a.m. on Dec. 1

Quality testing made last week revealed crab exceeding the minimum preseason test criteria between Klipsan Beach, Wash., and Point Arena, Calif.

"There is excellent quality out there this year," said Jerry Gardner, a business development manager for the Oregon Department of Agriculture. "The meat content is very high from what the testing indicated. It's just a guess on the volume, but it'll probably be on par with last year."
