Given the huge outpouring of enthusiasm and support from the SouthCoast community, we wanted to present this report on the Charles W. Morgan Homecoming. By most accounts, it was a great success. Indeed it is conceivable that there will be long-term positive outcomes because of the collaborative efforts from many different entities.

As a city of New Bedford event, last October we were asked by Mayor Jon Mitchell to co-chair the steering committee. The committee comprised some two dozen volunteers who met every two weeks, and an army of volunteers who assisted throughout the visit. We are indebted to all for their service.

Early on, we set out to accomplish three goals: engender civic pride, brand the city in a positive light to visitors from afar, and manage a complex event safely and without incurring debt (direct event costs were $600,000). On reflection, the nautical analogy holds — that the davits of the Charles W. Morgan carried our hopes and aspirations.
