LITTLE EGG HARBOR — Matt Gregg has tried other lines of work away from the water, including a commute to Manhattan for the 9-to-5 office life. But for him, nothing beats farming oysters in Barnegat Bay.

Gregg owns Forty North Oyster Farms — named for the 40 degree latitude where the oysters were initially seeded and grown. Gregg is a lifelong fisherman. In this video, I joined Gregg as he headed to work in his converted lobster boat to check on oyster beds that he placed in a protected and undeveloped location at the southern most part of Barnegat bay.

On Oct. 25, 2012 Forty North sold its first oysters to a local distributor. And just four days later, Hurricane Sandy slammed the coast, destroyed his boat and killed his oysters.

With the help of a veteran New York restaurateur, Gregg returned to the bay and restarted his business. Today, Forty North sells to about a dozen hand-picked accounts from Long Beach Island to Morristown.
