An Estuarine Gillnet Permit is now required for those who set anchored large-mesh or small-mesh gillnets in internal coastal waters for either commercial or recreational purposes.

This includes those who set nets under a Standard Commercial Fishing License, Retired Standard Commercial Fishing License or Recreational Commercial Gear License.

As part of the incidental take permits for both Atlantic sturgeon and sea turtles, the Estuarine Gillnet Permit was created to identify all participants in North Carolina’s estuarine anchored gillnet fishery.

The permit is free but must be obtained through the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries licensing offices.
