ILWACO — Dredge work in the federally maintained channel leading into the Port of Ilwaco is set to begin at the end of September, nearly a month later than originally expected.

The work in Baker Bay is not only important to the continued viability of the port's marina — Coast Guard vessels reportedly have scraped bottom trying to access the marina, while sport and commercial fishing boats struggle to get past each other in one particularly difficult and shallow spot — it is also at the heart of an agreement between the port and a local fish processor.

As the Chinook Observer has reported previously, Jessie's Ilwaco Fish Company and the port hope to develop and build a cold storage facility on port land currently used as boatyard.
