ST. GEORGE ISLAND — More than 100 dead red drum washed up on the east end of St. George Island earlier this month.

During a 2-mile morning walk Oct. 10, Jim Mott and his wife observed about 50 dead fish between East Slough and Sugar Hill in Dr. Julian Bruce St. George Island State Park.

“We counted at least 49 redfish carcasses on the high tide line, large bull redfish, most if not all, looked to be above the 26-inch release size,” he wrote. “There were also about 10 dead medium-sized fish that looked like Spanish mackerel. However, there were no dead, small-bait fish. On the same walk Tuesday (Oct. 7), we saw no dead fish.”

Head Ranger Josh Hodson said last week about 30 fish remain on the beach in the park. He said no new fish have come ashore for several days and the situation appears to be improving.
