The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is extending the public comment period for its proposed amendment to the Atlantic bluefin management plan. NMFS announced on Wednesday, Sept. 18 that it is extending the comment period until Dec. 10. It was originally set to expire on Oct. 23.

NMFS plans to revise Amendment 7 to the 2006 Consolidated Highly Migratory Species Fishery Management Plan because of changes in the fishery to prevent overfishing, reduce dead discards, comply with international treaties, minimize by-catch, improve reporting and monitoring, enhance the fishing experience and achieve the best possible yield.
