Popular seafood purchased from Swedish supermarkets in the Stockholm region contains Beta-Methylamino-L-Alanine (BMAA), a doctoral thesis from Stockholm University has said.
BMAA is a naturally-occurring amino acid with a possible link to neuro-degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the University said.
The thesis was the first screening study to measure BMAA in commercial seafood from metropolitan markets.
