ANNAPOLIS — In a March 26 floor debate over Senate Bill 929, state Sen. Stephen S. Hershey Jr. took on colleagues from Montgomery, Baltimore and Prince George’s counties, according to a news release.

The bill gives commercial fishing and seafood operators the same kind of nuisance lawsuit exemption farmers and agricultural businesses have.

Hershey, R-36-Upper Shore, reportedly defended the rights of commercial watermen.

“Our commercial seafood operations need the same protections as our farms. If a local business abides by proper zoning and adheres to health department guidelines, they shouldn’t be hassled with nuisance claims,” Hershey said.
