The North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission preserved shrimp trawling in the Pamlico Sound on Thursday by voting down a proposal to declare the entire body of water a nursery.
Nearly 200 shrimpers work the Pamlico Sound and have been outspoken in opposition to the rule change. Shrimping is the state's second-largest fishing industry. Trawling in the Pamlico Sound would have to stop if the sound were declared a nursery.
