2009 Year in review
On the Brink
In many fisheries, 2009 was marked by low prices, caused in large part by recession. Elsewhere, we saw contested stock assessments, shifting regional council demographics, a questionable default to catch shares and an investigation of law enforcement.
The good news after a bad year is that things generally improve.
Indeed, the recession seems to be abating, if not lifting. NOAA has found a director for NMFS. And, as I write these words, fishermen, after centuries of practicing individuality, were preparing to gather by the thousands at the nation’s Capitol.
