The Gulf of Maine Research Institute is partnering with restaurants throughout the region for an Out of the Blue promotion of cape shark, also known as dogfish. Starting Friday, July 3 and running until Sunday, July 12, cape shark will be available at each participating restaurant during the 10-day event. Cape shark is abundant and well deserving of a wider market.

As a joint Gulf of Mexico states seafood marketing effort sails into the sunset, the program’s Marketing Director has left for a job in the private seafood sector. Joanne McNeely Zaritsky, the former Marketing Director of the Gulf State Marketing Coalition, has joined St. Petersburg, FL based domestic seafood processor Captain’s Fine Foods as its new business development director to promote its USA shrimp product line.

ANCHORAGE, AK – Coastal Villages Region Fund has reached an agreement with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to help fund its fisheries research activities in Western Alaska this summer. The fund will provide up to $92,152 to support the operation of weirs on the Goodnews Bay and Kanektok rivers.

The U.S. Commerce Department announced the appointment of 30 new and returning members to the eight regional fishery management councils that partner with NMFS to manage ocean fish stocks. The new and reappointed council members begin their three-year terms on Aug. 11.

Each year, the Secretary of Commerce appoints approximately one-third of the total 72 appointed members to the eight regional councils. The secretary selects members from nominations submitted by the governors of fishing states, territories and tribal governments.

The New York Legislature has passed a law to create a State Commercial Fishing Advocate and an industry business development program. Co-sponsor State Sen. Ken LaValle said, “The commercial fishing industry is part of the fabric of the East End of Long Island. It’s essential that we ensure that the industry is adequately represented before state agencies and is provided the proper tools to thrive.

United Fishermen of Alaska is pleased to announce the election of at-large board members Lindsey Bloom, Zachary Hill, Bruce Schactler, and Paul A. Shadura II. The organization’s individual and lifetime members elect four at-large directors to represent more than 400 members on the board of directors. The at-large directors will serve two-year terms beginning June 15 and ending April 14, 2017.

A new report from the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization says that despite the fact that women make up almost half of the global fishing and seafood industry, the vast majority of them occupy roles in processing, support, retail and cleaning.

2015 0604 ITI MenhadenMembers of the Menhaden Fisheries Coalition joined the greater Reedville, Va., community on Thursday, June 4, in welcoming Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, who issued an official proclamation marking Virginia's allowable menhaden harvest for this year at 158,700 metric tons. The governor's action implements a 10 percent increase over last year's harvest level, which was approved last month by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.

"We need to have a strong and successful menhaden fishery," said the McAuliffe, who delivered his remarks in the shadow of the landmark Reedville smokestack.

2015 0602 CaliSalmon ITISan Francisco – The State Water Resources Control Board ordered the federal Bureau of Reclamation to immediately reduce water releases from Lake Shasta in order to avoid a second catastrophic salmon kill. The May 29 order from water board executive director Tom Howard followed a May 20 request from the Golden Gate Salmon Association to the water board to better protect salmon in 2015.
